Jermaine Lamarr Cole (Age 25), better known as his stage name J. Cole is an American rapper and producer. He is best known for being the first artist to be signed to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation.

Cole was born in Frankfurt, Germany and, before the age of 1, moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he was raised by his mother. He is of mixed-race, being born to a Black father and a White mother. Cole attended Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, and graduated in 2003. He decided that he had a better chance of getting signed in New York City, so he attended St. John's University on an academic scholarship where he majored in communication and minored in business, graduating magna cum laude.

Cole started rapping at the age of 12 when his cousin showed him the basics of rhyming. Inspired by Tupac Shakur,Canibus, and Eminem J. Cole developed a love for telling stories in his lyrics. At age 15, J. Cole had notebooks filled with rhymes but not beats of his own to record them with. His mother bought him a beat machine so he could produce music himself. By the age of 17, he was posting songs on Internet forums such as canibus-central.com under the moniker "Therapist".

Cole released his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in late 2007 after graduating college. J. Cole put his mixtape The Come Up hosted by DJ On Point including "soul filled sound beds, raw, energetic drums and an endless range of topics; everything from the carefree days of college to the seemingly endless plight of those have-nots scrapping for change" Jay-Z signed Cole after hearing one of the songs, "Lights Please." Prior to releasing his second mixtape, Cole released the single, "Show Me Somethin'" for promotional purposes. He released his second mixtape, The Warm Up, on June 15, 2009. Following the release of The Warm Up, he released the freestyle "Back to the Topic."
Cole appeared on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 3, on the track "A Star Is Born." He also featured on Wale's debut album, Attention Deficit in the song "Beautiful Bliss", Cole has also stated that he worked with producers such as No I.D., Pharrell, Jim Jonsin and Salaam Remi for his upcoming debut album. Which is due for release on October 26, 2010.

Why is J.Cole my Artist of the Week? Because J.Cole is BIG at the moment and is really talented, in a time when US Rap music is really in need of new blood in order for it to stay relevant, especially in the UK. It's refreshing and good to know that there is still some genuine talent coming into the industry, we've put up with the over-hyped mess that is Souja Boy for long enough, it's time for a change.

As mentioned above J.Cole's debut album 'Cole World' is due for release on October 26, 2010.

The London Korean Film Festival is the premiere Korean Film Festival in the UK and is now moving into it's 5th year. Last year's line up included Park Chan-wook's Thirst, Kim Ki-duk's Dream, Yang Ik-june's Breathless and Kim So-yeong's Treeless Mountain and many more of Korea's top films. This year has been another stellar year for Korean cinema and just going by the 5 films already confirmed for this years festival Korean cinema lovers are in for a treat.

Parlophone Records doesn't want you to buy their music! Thats right?
Why would I say such a thing? Well, when I was putting yesterday's 'Music Video Daily' together, I was going to include their new artist Sky Ferreira's new track 'One' (which I love by the way!). But as per usual with Parlophone you can't embed their artist's music video's onto your blog pages. Well Parlophone, have you guys and the other record company idiots, not learned anything from the Napster era, obviously not.

If you guys had embraced Mp3's and been quicker to set up online music stores instead of suing your fans in the late 90's, people wouldn't have got so used to free music! No! you dragged your heels in the mud for years and then offered inferior quality music (old average being 128kps) and thought people would be dumb enough to buy it. You were wrong then and you are wrong now.

This year YouTube hit 2 billion daily views, that's right 2 BILLION a day. And fair play to you, you are one of the few smart ones that does at least put your music videos online, I still don't understand why the other companies remove theirs, when everybody knows that music video's sell records! A lot of people are not sure about songs until they see the video, in some cases it can even totally change someones opinion of an song and encourage them to buy it even though they hated it originally.

Unfortunately Parlophone, not everyone watches YouTube videos by visiting the YouTube website. A lot of them are watched via third party websites and blogs, a lot of which are written by fans of the musicians and bands that they love. This blog here, exists solely to share the things that I love with the people on the web, in the hope that it encourages them to go out and purchase them too. Why then Parlophone have you decided to stop us from sharing the videos of your artists? Again your not the only ones, but you do have some very talented artists on your roster that could gain a lot from having their music videos shared.

FYI! I could still rip the Sky Ferreira from YouTube with third party software if I really wanted too, but I won't, because I don't see why I should have too! Parlophone Records you have been Named and Shamed, also Sky Ferreira's new track 'One' is out now and is well recommended.

Satoshi Kon, Dies at 46‎

The Japanese Anime director noted for serious, arthouse films which examine their characters' psychology, passed away on August 24, 2010 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 46. With his most notable works being the films; Millennium Actress, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers and the 13 episode series Paranoia Agent. Satoshi Kon took Anime to a place where no Anime director could, and will be solely missed. I can still remember the day I first watched Perfect Blue and after that I was hooked!

Rest In Peace Satoshi Kon, A genius who was taken from us too soon! I'm planning to do a Satoshi Kon season on the Blog in November in tribute to the great director, where I will examine most of his work and explain what mind it so good.

There was only ever going to be one choice this week, I've been following 'Scott Pilgrim Vs the World' since I saw the trailer while checking out 'Kick Ass' in March, and I am REALLY looking forward to seeing this film. Directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin and Chris Evans, Scott Pilgrim is a hyperactive, whacked-out filmly dream for the geek in everybody.

Plot

The story begins in Toronto where Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), the bass guitarist for the band "Sex Bob-Omb", begins dating high-schooler Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) despite the protests of his friends and bandmates. He later meets a mysterious American girl named Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and begins dating her, losing interest in Knives. Sex Bob-Omb competes in a battle of the bands to win a record contract with the label G-Man when Scott is attacked by Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), the first of Ramona's Seven Evil Exes who seek to control Ramona's love life. Scott defeats Matthew and learns from Ramona that, in order for them to continue dating, he must defeat each member of the League of Evil Exes.

3 Reasons why this is the film you should See this week?

1. It looks amazing, there is no other way to describe it.

2. Positive Critical response .

3. It opened to a mere $10 million or so at the US box office, but deserves better than that.

Scott Pilgrim opens in cinema's nationwide tomorrow (August 25th), watch Scott Pilgrim this week instead of the extremely poor looking Piranha 3D.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days: This film looks so stupid!

Why does Hollywood always have to do this? Follow up a very good film with a crappy straight to DVD sequel. I really liked the first 30 Days of Night, it was dark, gruesome and damn good, Dark days on the other hand just looks shit. The source material i.e the Dark Days comic is sound, it's the usual B list straight to DVD cast, the crappy trailer, and the relatively unknown director Ben Ketai, which has set off my alarm bells for this one. 30 Days of Night: Dark Days is looking like a film people should avoid, when it is released in October.

Plot Summary: Nearly a year has passed since the population of Barrow, Alaska was decimated by a vicious clan of vampires during its annual 30 days of night. Terrorized by nightmares and haunted by her husband's murder, sole survivor Stella has been trying desperately to expose the vampire threat to the world. When she's unexpectedly recruited by three other vampire attack victims, Stella sets out to reap vengeance upon Lillith, the vampire queen responsible for the Alaskan bloodbath. Audio Push is just what the world needs! Yet another Hip Hop Jerk group, I don't know whether it's just down to the fact that I'm getting older (I'm 27 this year), but the music industry is going to a really bad patch at the mo. I can't believe that in the same year that really talented artists like Janelle Monae and J Cole break through into the mainstream record companies are still signing bullshit artists like these fools. Yeah I understand that the kids are into this sort of music but that's why we put up with groups like The Bangs and the New Boys who can make decent music when they try hard. The hotly anticipated 2009 Japanese historical fantasy film Goemon is now available on UK DVD, directed and written by former music video director Kazuaki Kiriya, who also wrote and directed the very stylish 2004 Casshern film adaptation. Goemon is loosely based on the story of Goemon Ishikawa, a legendary ninja bandit hero who stole valuables from the rich and gave them to the poor.

Plot

The film is a fictional account of Goemon Ishikawa's exploits and his role during the final phase of Japanese civil war, especially the conflict leading to the decisive Battle of Sekigahara.

The young ninja Goemon finds out his master Nobunaga Oda has been betrayed by his most loyal vassal Hideyoshi Toyotomi and killed. He then embarks on a path of revenge.

This weeks choice was easy, The Illusionist had it's UK premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in June and is a throwback to the old days of 2D animation. The film is based on an unproduced script that the French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati had written in 1956 as a personal letter to his estranged eldest daughter, Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel, and was directed by Sylvain Chomet in his purpose built studio in the heart of Edinburgh. The Illusionist has some of the most beautiful animation I have ever seen and is easily the most interesting film to be released this week.

Plot

Details the story of a dying breed of stage entertainer whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars. Forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars, he meets a young fan who changes his life forever..

3 Reasons why this is the film you should See this week?

1. Has some of the most beautiful animation I have ever seen.

2. Positive Critical response .

3. More grown up than the usual animated fare.

The Illusionist is scheduled to be released in cinemas this Friday (August 20th).

Winnie - first class speed of light (2003)

Winnie formed in 2002 and their first mini album 'first class speed of light' was released a year later in 2003. First class speed of light is a much softer affair than their recent stuff like 'Winner' and anything on the 'Dye Myself Black' album, their sound in 2003 and throughout the album can easily be described as dreamy pop rock. That's not to say it's bad though, because it's definitely not, there's definitely a 'Brilliant Green' vibe going on, throughout this album, which i liked a lot. First class speed of light is not Winnie's best release but is a introduction to their music and is well worth a listen. First class speed of light is available on import from YesAsia for a very reasonable £14.

It's that time of year again when the first details about the London Film Festival(LFF) start to creep out, I love the London Film festival and have checked out at least a few films at every festival for the last 5 years, this year will be no different.

Never Let Me Go is this years opening film and stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. The film is a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. Kathy (Mulligan), Tommy (Garfield) and Ruth (Knightley) spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school where they discover a dark and haunting secret about their future. As they leave the shelter of the school behind and draw inexorably closer to the devastating fate that awaits them as adults, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart. Twentieth Century Fox will release the film in the UK on 14 January 2011.

The full programme for The 54th BFI London Film Festival will be announced at the Press Launch on Wednesday 8 September and the festival runs from 13-28 October 2010.

With Toy Story 3, Inception and The Karate Kid still tearing up UK cinema's, it's another poor week for new UK cinema releases. Films released this week include the universally panned 'The last Airbender', the dreadful looking 'Marmaduke' and Disney's crapfest 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'. So this weeks Hot Movie choice is 'Black Dynamite' a spoof on blaxploitation films from the 70's. Black Dynamite stars Michael Jai White(Why Did I Get Married Too?, Exit Wounds), Salli Richardson(I Am Legend), Arsenio Hall, Kevin Chapman and Tommy Davidson, and is directed by Scott Sanders and David M. Thompson (uncredited).

Plot

Black Dynamite, a Vietnam veteran and former CIA agent, vows to clean up the streets after his brother Jimmy is killed by a shady organization. O'Leary, Black Dynamite's former Army and CIA partner, reinstates Black Dynamite back into the agency, because they do not want him seeking vengeance by himself. Trying to get to the bottom of Jimmy's murder, he finds out that his brother was actually working undercover for the CIA. Black Dynamite also finds out the shady organization is filling the black orphanages with heroin. He declares war on local drug dealers and successfully cleans up the streets.

After discovering the government's involvement in the drug ring, Black Dynamite steals the ledger belonging to the corrupt Congressman James. Black Dynamite and his team storm the warehouse to capture a big shipment. They learn of a top secret operation called "Code Kansas", but find no drugs in the warehouse; only Anaconda malt liquor. In a diner, they decipher Code Kansas as a plan to use Anaconda malt liquor to shrink the penises of African-American men. Back at the warehouse, Black Dynamite finds O'Leary is part of the evil plan, but is just following orders. He kills O'Leary before acquiring his next lead to Code Kansas.
Black Dynamite heads to Kung Fu Island, where he discovers that the Fiendish Dr. Wu created the secret formula found in Anaconda malt liquor. After defeating him in battle, Black Dynamite discovers the true identity of the mastermind of the entire operation from Dr. Wu.

Black Dynamite then travels to the White House and confronts President Richard Nixon, who has been giving the orders from the beginning. After Black Dynamite defeats Nixon in a kung-fu battle and threatens to expose him, the president begs to be killed and his plan is foiled.

Artist of the Week: Winnie

Winnie is an indie Japanese band formed in 2002, they released their first demo in the same year. In 2003 they released their first mini-album 'First Class Speed of Light. While they continued to perform live they did not release their second mini-album The Darkest Eternal Lights until 2008.

Why is Winnie my Artist of the Week? Because Winnie is a really good Japanese group whose music is pop/rock inspired with all of it being sung in mostly understandable English with the vocals being shared between female member Iori and male member Okuji.

Based on a novel by Kotaro Isaka, Fish Story weaves together several seemingly separate storylines taking place at different points in time over a 37-year span to explain how a little-known punk rock song can save the world

Another fine release from that wonderful company Third Window films, The Third Window Films brand was born in 2005 and they have never released a bad film, OK maybe one, 'Teenage Hooker Became a Killing Machine' is actually a really bad film.

Plot

In 1975, an unpopular Japanese punk band called "Gekirin" (Wrath) starts work on their 3rd album. Unfortunately the band is a little ahead of its time; punk won't be marketable until the Sex Pistols debut in the UK the following year. Due to nonexistent sales, their record company decides to drop them and they break up soon after recording their final song: "Fish Story".

In 1982 a timid college student named Masashi (Gaku Hamada) becomes fascinated by strange rumors surrounding the song. Apparently, at a certain point in the recording there is a brief interlude where you can hear a woman scream. Later, he meets a mysterious woman at a party who inexplicably predicts that he will save the world one day.

In 2009 a teenager named Asami (Mikako Tabe) falls asleep during a school field trip and gets left behind on a boat. Initially distraught, she's eventually consoled by a kindly cook. Suddenly, men with guns storm in and attempt a boat-jacking.

In 2012 a huge comet can be seen in the sky on a path to destroy Earth. The US has failed in their attempt to blow it up and with only 5 hours left before impact, all major city streets are completely abandoned. That is, except for one record store that continues business as usual. Within the store, "Fish Story" can be heard playing on an old turntable...

Fish Story is available now and is well recommended, also Amazon and Play.com are currently selling it for the really low price of £8.99 so there is really no excuse, buy it now!

Plot

Based on real events, the film follows two young musicians, Negar and Ashkan, who are promised a gig in London and embark on a frantic mission to assemble a backing band. The couple have recently served prison terms for breaching the ban on 'Western and decadent music', and for Negar, these activities are particularly dangerous: as a female musician, unauthorised public performances can carry savage penalties.

Now, they face a search for the elusive and costly paperwork that will permit them to leave for Europe. Teaming up with promoter and bootlegger Nader, their search takes them into Tehran and a vibrant underground culture of rappers, rockers, electro-artists and singer-songwriters who risk arrest to perform Western songs overlaid with their own politicised lyrics. But as Negar and Ashkan try to convince others to follow their lead, the risks that they are taking become all too apparent.

Originally titled Kasi az Gorbehaye Irani Khabar Nadareh, in the film's native language, Persian, this film first took on the name of Nobody Knows About The Persian Cats before finally being titled No One Knows About Persian Cats. The film offers perspective of Iran as it explores its underground Rock scene.

Antwan André Patton (born February 1, 1975), better known by his stage name Big Boi, is an American rapper, song-writer, record producer and actor, best known for being a member of American Hip Hop duo OutKast alongside Andre 3000.

In contrast to his more sedate, philosophical partner, Patton's on-record persona enjoys partying. However, Patton has often used his lyrics to criticize the problems that plague both the African American community and the world. An example is 2003's "War", a scathing attack on the Bush administration and the War on Terror. Another example is 2008's "Sumthin's Gotta Give" with Mary J. Blige talking about the state of America and Barack Obama..

Solo Career

After four increasingly successful albums as a duo, the members of OutKast chose to make two solo albums, and release them as a double album under the OutKast name. Andre 3000 released The Love Below and Big Boi Speakerboxxx. The two albums were packaged together as Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in 2003. Speakerboxxx featured a style similar to Outkast's previous efforts, while The Love Below explored more offbeat territory, with Andre 3000 mainly singing rather than his usual rapping. One song from each album was released in September 2003 as a single.

Patton's choice was the single "The Way You Move", featuring Sleepy Brown. It was originally supported by urban radio, but then crossed over to pop charts and became almost as big a pop hit as Benjamin's "Hey Ya!". "The Way You Move" supplanted "Hey Ya!" as the #1 song on the US pop charts. The second single from Big Boi's side of the album was "Ghetto Musick", which featured both members of Outkast and a sample from Patti LaBelle's "Love, Need & Want You".

In 2007 after the sixth album under the OutKast name, Idlewild, Big Boi announced plans to release a full fledged solo album. While he had released a previous solo album in Speakerboxxx, it still was technically under the OutKast name. The album was to be titled Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The album's first promotional single, "Royal Flush", was released in 2007, and featured Raekwon and Andre 3000. Over the next few years the album saw many delays, but multiple promotional and video singles were released such as "Shine Blockas" featuring Gucci Mane, "For Yo Sorrows" featuring George Clinton and Too $hort and "General Patton" featuring Big Rube.

The first official single was "Shutterbugg" featuring Cutty and the second "Follow Us" featuring Vonnegutt. The album was released internationally on July 5. Guest artists include alternative urban songstress Janelle Monae; Big Boi's own new group Vonnegutt; plus established rappers T.I. and B.o.B. According to metacritic, the album has garnered "universal acclaim," ranging from 100/100 from Now Magazine to a 70/100 from Rolling Stone. In a July 2010 interview for The Village Voice, Big Boi revealed that he is working on the follow-up album to Sir Lucious Left Foot, entitled Daddy Fat Sax: Soul Funk Crusader, stating that he is "maybe about six songs into it". At the band’s core is the partnership between founding members Z Berg (vocals, guitar) and Tennessee Thomas (drums) who formed the band when they were 15. On enlisting Laena Geronimo (bass) and Annie Monroe (organ) says Tennessee “we never intended to be a girl band, but we became rather pleased about it eventually". Terius Youngdell Nash (born June 14, 1981), better known by his stage name The-Dream, is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter and record producer. He was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, and raised by his mother Reva Nash until her death at age 35. The-Dream moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he was raised by his grandfather.

The-Dream met R&B producer Laney Stewart in 2001, who helped him sign a publishing deal. He spent two years working on Nivea's second album Complicated, and continued to write and produce with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Laney's brother. Together, The-Dream and Tricky produced Rihanna's 2007 smash hit "Umbrella" and Beyonce's hit, Single ladies,which boosted The-Dream's music career. Plot

Let Me In is a 2010 American horror film directed by Matt Reeves based on the novel Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist and the Swedish film adaptation of the same name.

Let the Right One In is not an old film so this remake is yet another example of Americans not wanting to learn how to read! But what's surprising about Let Me In is that, just like Quarantine which was the American remake of REC, this is actually looking like it might be a decent film. Let Me In is due to be released in the UK in October and stars Chloe Moretz who was last seen in the comic book adaptation Kick Ass.

Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion is the first exhibition in Europe to comprehensively survey avant-garde Japanese fashion, from the early 1980s to the present. Curated by the eminent Japanese fashion historian Akiko Fukai, Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition explores the unique sensibility of Japanese design, and its sense of beauty embodied in clothing.

Japanese fashion made an enormous impact on the world fashion scene in the late 20th century and designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto redefined the very basis of fashion. Their works will be shown alongside Kawakubo’s protégé, the techno-couturier Junya Watanabe, together with the acclaimed Jun Takahashi, and the new generation of radical designers including Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu, Matohu, Akira Naka and Mintdesigns.
